During December 26 2020 – January 1, 2021 (extension available) we invite you to the Ghana 2020 Getaway, space is very limited. I Love Being Black & Traveling Black have paired up again to take you through 3 major cities in Ghana. We will visit the slavery dungeons, make kente cloth with the Ashanti tribe and party on rooftops. Ready?
After you fill out the form below we will assist you in booking the best flight from your home city. All of our tours have a focus on diasporic Black experiences, support for Black businesses and local Black guides. Check the itinerary below.
The president of Ghana dedicated 2019 as the Year Of Return. In case you missed that trip, we’re going again in 2020! Akwaaba (welcome) to Ghana! After you land we will meet you in the airport @ baggage claim. You can freshen up then get to know everyone at the meet-n-greet and receive your swag bags. We’ll also talk about being safe and responsible global citizens while in Ghana. After that we will head to Cape Coast. In Ghana 2020 will be a momentous year.
Today we’ll dress in white and start out by visiting the river where our ancestors took their last baths. Then we’ll head to the Cape Coast Dungeon. During our private tour we’ll learn in-depth about maafa (the “great disaster”) and the atrocities of the past that our people went through. You can literally feel the ancestors, welcoming you home. Take your time here; a big part of ‘returning home’ is learning what happened to our people. When you walk backward through the “door of no return”, they call it the “door of return”, and welcome you back to Africa. After the slavery dungeon we will go to our private tailor who will custom make you any outfit(s) you like!
We’ll make the drive to Kumasi and head straight to a cultural village. Here they make cloth with a manual loom and stamp it with Adinkra symbols. The ink is made from boiling tree bark (see video here). Adinkra symbols are a big part of Akan / Ashanti culture, the stamps are made from a hardened calabash shell. You will have the opportunity to purchase authentic cloth and calabash Adinkra stamps here. After the village we’ll check-in to our new hotel and relax a bit before dinner. The Ghana 2020 Getaway continues!
After breakfast we get to visit one of the favorite places on the tour… a village where they make colorful kente cloth! They operate manual looms here as well, if you’re lucky they’ll let you try it out! Weaving is a tradition that can start as early as childhood, and to be authentic it must be done in the “old way”. You can buy authentic kente here (recommended) to remind you of the Ghana 2020 Getaway. Afterward we will make the drive to Accra. After we rest up we’ll head to an upscale rooftop restaurant with unparalleled views of the bustling city.
After breakfast our tailor will join us to drop off your completed custom made apparel. Next up we get to experience an amazing cultural festival! There will be a deep lineup of amazing performers, workshops, turn-up sessions, alcohol tastings and meet-n-greets. And of course everyone will be wearing their flyest apparel, some of which was just made in Ghana. The party will continue on into the night but there will be a chance to take a power nap so you don’t miss much ?
We’ll start the day at the Kwame Nkrumah’s Mausoleum to learn about Ghana’s first president, Pan-Africanism, and Ghanaian independence. During the Ghana 2020 Getaway we want you to not only be immersed in culture but to be equipped with knowledge too. Next up is the Arts Center Market where you can practice your bargaining skills, and find gifts for everyone at home who missed out on the trip. From handmade masks, baskets, clothing and art, you will find it all here. Afterward we’ll head to Ghana’s most vibrant beach for a day party, horseback riding or ATV’ing on the beach. Tonight we’ll have our wrap-up @ dinner & enjoy an African buffet with all sorts of choices to try. Foodie heaven.
For the people that did not choose to extend their trip, this is the sad day that we have to say goodbye. Congratulations on experiencing the Ghana 2020 Getaway. We will take you to the airport early to ensure you make your flight on time. Hope to see you again on future Traveling Black trips!
If you chose to extend your trip we’ll be taking you to the Shai Hills Nature Reserve. Here you will see baboons, antelope, zebras and loads of plant life. A refreshing brief escape out of the city. Next we’ll take you to an authentic Bead making village! There you will learn the art of bead making and be able to purchase many different beads.
This is our last full day of the tour extension. We will make the short drive to a nearby town where many African-Americans have settled. One in particular has created an African Ancestral Wall where he works with local artists to paint prominent Black ancestors who helped pave the way. Today we will also learn about how to buy land in Ghana and build on it. After returning to Accra you will have a few hours of free time.
The trip extension ends here… if you have time before your flight and want to make one last run to the Arts Center Market we will take you there. Afterward we’ll make sure you and all your plunder get to the airport on time!

For now we’ve postponed it indefinitely until COVID 19 subsides to the point that we can be sure all of our participants will be safe. COVID-19 is not bad in Ghana but the transit still has safety issues with staying safe from COVID-19.
