During March 27 – April 1st, 2019 (extensions available) we invite you to Experience South Africa, space is very limited. I Love Being Black & Traveling Black will be taking you to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival featuring headliners such as Chaka Khan and many others.
After you fill out the form below we will assist you in booking the best flight from your home city. All of our tours have a focus on diasporic Black experiences, support for Black businesses and local Black guides. Check the itinerary below.
DAY 1. CAPE TOWN: EXPERIENCE SOUTH AFRICA
For many of you this will be your first time on African soil but we guarantee it will not be your last. We’ll meet you at the airport after you land, then take you to check in to your room in our luxury condo to freshen up. At our meet-greet-n-eat you’ll receive a swag bag and meet the others. We’ll also talk about being responsible global citizens who have a thirst for knowledge & experiences while having a healthy respect for other cultures. Today is a good day to do a lil shopping and pick up some things you forgot at home. Also, it’s Friday night; naturally there are options for going out on the town. For those who are jetlagged you may want to call it an early night.
DAY 2. CAPE TOWN: TABLE MOUNTAIN
After breakfast we’ll start the day at the District 6 museum to learn about the apartheid stories here. Next up is Table Mountain! Did you know Table Mountain was named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature? A portion of the mountain looks like a flat-top haircut, we’ll hike or take the cablecar up. To experience South Africa you should see this. After lunch we’ll explore the vendors & shops downtown; you can practice your bargaining skills here. For our nightlife selection we’ll take you to a lively lounge where we may run into some of the jazz fest artists!
DAY 3. CAPE TOWN: CAPE TOWN JAZZ FESTIVAL
Today we will journey to the southernmost tip of the African continent, Cape Agulhas. Here you will see the dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans; they don’t seem to mix! We’ll take a scenic route back, then enjoy some free time before the Cape Town Jazz Festival! Voted one of the top 5 jazz festivals in the world, it sells out every year. A host of talent will grace the stages, I’m most looking forward to seeing Chaka Khan & also the Soweto Gospel Choir. To experience South Africa you have to enjoy the music.
DAY 4. CAPE TOWN: LET’S GO WINE-TASTING
Now we’re off to the Stellenbosch area just outside of Cape Town. Stellenbosch is known for it’s amazing wines which rival those in Napa, Santa Barbara, etc. We will be hosting a private event just for you at South Africa’s first Black owned winery. We’ll sip, laugh and enjoy delectable bites such as South African biltong and local fruit. After the wine is done we will head to one of Cape Town’s most beautiful beaches to eat & relax. After we freshen up we’ll enjoy day 2 of the Cape Town Jazz Festival.
DAY 5. CAPE TOWN: SHISA NYAMA DAY PARTY BBQ
We’ll start the day teaching, learning and sharing with the youth in one of Capetown’s townships. Visiting the townships is important in order experience South Africa authentically. Next up is the shisa nyama! A shisa nyama is essentially a day party at a butchery. You select your meat and sides, sip on drinks and listen to the funky South African rhythms. Sunday is always the best day for these events! For dinner we will be eating with a South African family, discussing current events and enjoying our last night in Cape Town.
DAY 6. JOHANNESBURG: HERE WE COME
Today is the sad day we have to leave Cape Town. But… your Experience South Africa trip doesn’t have to end. You have the option of extending your trip to also include Johannesburg (AKA Jo’burg)! For those that choose to do this, after our flight to Johannesburg we’ll check into our 4-star hotel then head to the apartheid museum. The apartheid museum in Jo’burg is one of the best places to learn about how apartheid was instituted across Southern Africa and what people did to fight back.
DAY 7. JOHANNESBURG: AFRICAN SAFARI
If you’ve never been on an African safari, this will likely be the highlight of your entire trip. We’ll hop into our safari vehicles and listen to the guide run through the plan for the day. THEN we will start the search for the “Big 5” animals (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo) and all of the other cool plants and wildlife. We will have our own photographer onboard with us to document the surroundings with his telephoto lens. Afterward we’ll head to Soweto! You can tour Mandela’s old house and see lots of street performers, art, and good vibes. We’ll have our last dinner at a fusion African-Sushi restaurant, all you can eat!
DAY 8. JOHANNESBURG: GOODBYE SOUTH AFRICA
This is the sad day that we have to say goodbye, but we are glad you got to Experience South Africa. We will take you to the airport early to ensure you make your flight on time. We hope to see you again on future Traveling Black trips!
