During June 5-12, 2026 (extension available) we invite you to join a life-changing tour to Ghana curated by Traveling Black. This private tour will highlight arts, culture and excitement while we enjoy West Africa together. All of our tours have a focus on diasporic Black experiences, support for Black businesses and local Black guides. Space is limited, are you ready? Check the itinerary below.
After getting off of the international flight to Accra (ACC) we’ll take you to our hotel to check in and freshen up. Then we’ll get to know each other at the meet-n-greet and you will receive your stylish swag bags. We’ll also talk about being safe and responsible global citizens while in Ghana. We will have our private tailor on site to take your measurements and help you craft the perfect African outfit. Akwaaba (welcome) to Ghana!
We’ll start the day at Kwame Nkrumah’s Mausoleum [360º image] to learn about Ghana’s first president, Pan-Africanism and Ghanaian independence. Next up is the Arts Center [360º image] market where you can practice your bargaining skills and find gifts for everyone at home who missed out on the trip. We recommend bringing an empty suitcase/duffle to have room to bring all of your purchases back home. Afterward we’ll relax at the hotel before going out at night to a trendy lounge with live jazz music and great energy.
Today we’ll make the drive to Kumasi, home of the Ashanti (Asante) Kingdom. We will get to experience the Akwasidae Festival [360º image] firsthand. This festival happens every 6 weeks and it will honor the Ashanti King and the local chiefs in a durbar. Kumasi is the center of the Ashanti Kingdom and the festival is held in the King’s Manhyia Palace. The King often makes an appearance at this festival wearing his solid gold artifacts, hopefully we’ll get to see him! You will have some free time before we meet back up again for dinner.
Today we embark on one of the favorite parts of the tour… we’ll visit a village where they make colorful kente cloth! If you’re lucky they’ll let you operate the manual loom. Weaving is a tradition that can start as early as childhood, and to be authentic it must be done in the “old way”. You can buy authentic kente here (recommended). Next up is the Adinkra village [360º image]. Here we will learn about Adinkra symbols and the process of making the ink and stamping the kente cloth. You will get to choose your own symbols and stamp a strip of kente cloth to take home.
We’ll start out the day by heading to Cape Coast where we’ll check into our new hotel then it’s time to have some fun. At Kakum National Park you’ll embark on a 1.7 mile roundtrip hike and the option to walk across 7 bridges that are suspended high amongst the trees [360º image]. If you don’t feel like crossing all 7 there is an option to bow out after the first one, or you can skip the bridges all together. The rest of the day will be free time for you to relax and enjoy our beachfront African design villas.
Today we will dress in white and begin at the Assin Manso river where the enslaved Africans had their last bath. Next we will head to the Cape Coast Slavery Dungeon [360º image]. During our private tour we’ll learn in-depth about maafa (the “great disaster”) and the atrocities of the past. Take your time here; a big part of ‘returning home’ is learning what happened to our people. When you walk backward through the “door of no return”, they call it the “door of return” [360º image], which symbolically welcomes you back to Africa. Afterward we will take part in a Naming Ceremony where you will be given African names and a certificate of commemoration.
We will be heading back to Accra today and on the way we will visit Ngleshie Amanfro, Senior High School. Traveling Black has adopted this school; we visit them annually to encourage the youth, watch a brief cultural show and give a donation. Back in Accra our tailor will meet us to drop off our custom made items. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Arts Center one more time in case you want to purchase some last minute things. At night we’ll have our wrap-up dinner on a posh rooftop and wear some of the clothing we recently acquired!
For the people who did not do the extension we will make sure you get to the airport for your flight home. For the extension folks we will be heading north for the day. The first stop will be Aburi Botanical Gardens where you will see the Tree of Life. Then we will visit one of the most famous Bead Markets in all of West Africa. There you will find all sorts of colorful handmade beads from Africa and other parts of the world. Next we will continue on to see the Boti Waterfalls where you can relax in nature and even swim in the waters if you like.
This is the last full day for the extension folks. You will get to visit the African Ancestral Wall. Here you will see painted images of ancestors of African descent. We will also get to speak with the owner about his vision for the wall, his move from the U.S. to Ghana and the real estate market in Ghana.
Today is the sad day we have to say goodbye. We will make sure you get to the airport on time for your flight home and we hope to see you on future Traveling Black tours!
