sold out!!
During June 21-28th, 2024 (extension available) we invite you to join a life-changing tour to Ghana curated by Traveling Black. We will highlight arts, culture and fun during this trip. All of our tours have a focus on diasporic Black experiences, support for Black businesses and local Black guides. Space is limited, are you ready? Check the itinerary below.
Akwaaba (welcome) to Ghana!
After you land we will meet you in the airport @ baggage claim. We’ll take you to our hotel to check in and freshen up. Then we’ll get to know each other at the meet-n-greet and receive the stylish swag bags. We’ll also talk about being safe and responsible global citizens while in Ghana. We will also have our private tailor on site to take your measurements and help you craft the perfect African outfit. Also, it’s Friday… if you’re up for some nightlife there are plenty of options!
We’ll start the day at Kwame Nkrumah’s Mausoleum to learn about Ghana’s first president, Pan-Africanism, and Ghanaian independence. During the GHANA 2024 tour we want you to not only be immersed in culture but to be equipped with knowledge too. Next up is the Arts Center Market where you can practice your bargaining skills and find gifts for everyone at home who missed out on the trip. In this African fabric heaven you will also find handmade masks, baskets, clothing and art. We recommend bringing an empty suitcase/duffle to have room to take back all of your purchases. After the Arts Center we’ll hit the beach to dip our feet into the Atlantic Ocean that touches West Africa. At night we’ll go to a trendy live music lounge venue with great energy.
Today we will visit a Ghanaian Primary School to engage with the youth. They will teach us about their schooling and we will share about our own experiences. After this cultural exchange we’ll make the trip to Kumasi to experience the Akwasidae Festival. Kumasi is the center of the Ashanti Kingdom and the festival is held in the King’s Manhyia Palace. The King often makes an appearance at this festival, hopefully we’ll get to see him!
Today we embark on one of the favorite parts of the tour… we’ll visit a village where they make colorful kente cloth! If you’re lucky they’ll let you operate the manual loom. Weaving is a tradition that can start as early as childhood, and to be authentic it must be done in the “old way”. You can buy authentic kente here (recommended). Next up is the Adinkra village. Here we will learn about Adinkra symbols and the process of making ink and stamping the fabric.
We will make the drive to Cape Coast. On the way we will stop in Assin Manso at the river where the enslaved Africans had their last bath before being taken to the slavery dungeons. After some free time we will do a Naming Ceremony where you will be given a West African name and we’ll have an open discussion about the etymology of the names and the meanings of the surrounding culture.
Today we head to the Cape Coast Slavery Dungeon. During our private tour we’ll learn in-depth about maafa (the “great disaster”) and the atrocities of the past that our people went through. You can literally feel the ancestors, welcoming you home. Take your time here; a big part of ‘returning home’ is learning what happened to our people. When you walk backward through the “door of no return”, they call it the “door of return”, which symbolically welcomes you back to Africa. The rest of the day will be free time to decompress and relax. After the dungeon you’ll have the opportunity to visit Kakum National Park. You’ll experience a hike and then 7 suspended bridges where you can walk amongst the trees.
We will be heading back to Accra today. Our tailor will meet us to drop off our custom made items. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Arts Center 1 more time in case you want to purchase a few more things.
For the people who did not do the extension we will make sure you get to the airport for your flight home. For the extension folks we will spend the day time poolside. You will have the opportunity to go out at night, the weekend is starting.
We will start off the day going to a bead making village to learn about the process and what the different beads mean. Afterward you will get to visit the African Ancestral Wall. Here you will see painted images of ancestors of African descent. We will also get to speak with the owner about his vision or the wall, his move from the U.S. to Ghana and real estate in Ghana.
This is the sad day that we have to say goodbye. Congratulations on experiencing the Ghana 2024 Tour. We will take you to the airport early to ensure you make your flight on time. Hope to see you again on future Traveling Black trips!
