During July 31 – August 7, 2018 we invite you to Experience Ghana (space very limited)! I Love Being Black & Traveling.black have teamed up once again to curate a highly recommended life experience that you will never forget. Everyone is talking about Black Panther, it’s time to visit Wakanda for real. Ghana has the perfect blend of advanced technological innovations and deeply rich culture. After you submit your deposit we will assist you in booking the best flight from your home city. All of our tours have a focus on diasporic Black experiences, Black businesses and Black guides whenever possible. Most Black people in America have roots in West Africa with a large percentage coming from Ghana. It’s time we go meet our cousins, check the itinerary: For many of you this will be your first time on African soil but we guarantee it will not be your last. You may want to kiss the ground, or at least touch it. After you land we will meet you in the airport @ baggage claim. We will take you to your hotel room to relax, then we’ll have a meet-n-greet where you receive your swag bags and get to know each other. We’ll also talk about being responsible global citizens who have a thirst for knowledge & experiences and a healthy respect for other cultures. Next we’ll take you to pick out some kente cloth (or other African fabric) to deliver to the seamstress for your own customized authentic apparel. And of course you’ll be looking forward to eating your first Ghanaian meal… jollof rice! In order to Experience Ghana you have to try it. We’ll start by driving to Cape Coast. The recognition of Emancipation Day originated from enslaved Africans in the Caribbean on August 1, 1834. Emancipation Day has been celebrated in Ghana on August 1st since 1998, the event this year will be a 20th year commemoration. You will bear witness to a ceremony that celebrates breaking the curse of slavery and returning back home in a symbolic fashion. When you walk backward through the “door of no return”, they call it the “door of return”, and welcome you back to Africa. Chiefs, locals, travelers from abroad and those who have repatriated to Ghana will all be in attendance for this festive occasion. Today we will wake up and eat a tasty home-cooked breakfast in a Ghanaian home and learn about maafa (the “great disaster”). Then we’ll head to the Cape Coast Castle (dungeon). We will have a private tour there and learn more in-depth about maafa and the atrocities of the past that our people went through. You can literally feel the ancestors, welcoming you home. Take your time here, some of our ancestors came through this very dungeon. In the evening we’ll have discussions about what we learned and the impacts that this has. We’ll make the drive to Kumasi in our private coach. After checking into the new hotel and relaxing a bit we’ll be heading out for a special treat; we’ll be taking you a cultural village where they make kente cloth and stamp it with Adinkra symbols in the original style with a manual loom and ink made from boiling tree bark (see video here). Adinkra symbols are a big part of Akan / Ashanti culture, these are made from a hardened calabash shell. You will have the opportunity to purchase authentic kente cloth and calabash Adinkra stamps here, and if you’re lucky they’ll let you operate the loom! The rest of this day is free for you to do whatever you like, even if you just want to catch up on sleep. Today we’ll be heading back to Accra. We will drive passed the famous Blackstar gate which was commissioned by brotha Kwame Nkrumah. Then we will go to the Nkrumah memorial where we will learn about the man himself and about the inception of Pan-Africanism! Next we’ll get a tasty lunch and walk through Makola market to shop like the locals do (remember your training). To truly Experience Ghana you have to walk through here! Finally, we’ll end up in Jamestown to enjoy a beverage as we watch the sunset from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Labadi Beach is undoubtedly Ghana’s most vibrant beach. Every weekend there is a beach party, lots of people, and yep… horse-riding on the beach! We’ll have music, lots of food/drinks and the opportunity to get in the water so bring your cute-suit. After the beach we’ll go pick up our custom-made apparel and do any final alterations. At night in Accra we’ll head to a famous bar & grill that is known for its jazz music. We will start the day’s activities off with an adventure! TroTros are vibrant vehicles used to take passengers to and fro, but we will be creating our own TroTro Experience in Accra! We’ll get to drive around in a TroTro while enjoying live music, poetry and other stories about Ghana and the Black experience. Then, during our last evening together we’ll eat, reminisce, compare our fly new outfits and talk about the future of our people, together. We will end the night on a high note by fully diving into the nightlife, VIP included. Let’s learn some new dances! This is the sad day that we have to say goodbye, but we are glad you got to Experience Ghana. We will take you to Accra airport early to ensure you make your flight on time. We hope to see you again on future Traveling Black trips.
