Riding scooters in Bali can be dangerous, sure, but it can also be fun. Read through this list then you'll be ready when you get to Bali.
Scooter. Hyperlapse. Zoom.
Protect Yaself
As you can see from the hyperlapse video above, riding scooters in Bali can be a bit hectic (to put it mildly). The main thing you should be concerned with is safety. This section goes beyond helmets and signals (both recommended though) and let's you know what to watch out for.
The first thing you may notice is that there are a lot of scooters and motorbikes on the streets of Bali. Sometimes even more than cars. #2... those lines on the roads which normally denote makeshift boundaries AKA "lanes" don't mean anything in Bali. The scooters in Bali cross over multiple lanes looking for a way forward, and some even ride the opposite direction of traffic to get ahead. Yep. So keep your eyes peeled, this is not the time to take selfies and daydream while in motion.
Scooter TLC
Things in Bali are relatively cheap for tourists. Riding scooters in Bali may cost you $4 USD per day. Sweet. But one thing to take note of is the upkeep of the bike when you rent it. Take 'er around the block a couple times, get used to the handling of it, the brakes, and listen for any odd noises. If it sounds weird, take it back and get another one. Also make sure your helmet fits right and will protect you in case you need it to.
Gas stations are sorta hard to find, but what you will find is vendors along the side of the rode selling gasoline in vodka bottles. For real. They are ok to buy from don't worry, everyone does it. But you also want to watch your fuel gauge (if it works) to make sure you get gas before you hit E. No riding on fumes during vacation.
Hit The Road Jack
Now that you know the rules, get out there on the road and feel the wind in your hair; or on your aerodynamically bald head, like me. There are lots of places to go such as:
- Monkey forest
- Shopping in Ubud
- Partying in Kuta
- See the Keçak dance
- Experience the waves at Dreamland beach
Riding scooters in Bali gives you a $4 pass/day to freedom of mobility, use it wisely!
PS - If you haven't been to Bali yet, go here and use the same tactics to get a free flight :)
